There is an interesting query posted on the message board by "Anonymous" regarding this past week's contest results. We at the Tribune were going to allow the last minute entries sent in through the message board to stand if there wasn't a protest. Now that the gauntlet has been thrown and questionability has reared it's ugly head, we will reconsider whether Taiyo's entry is valid as she did not send her entry to me via e-mail as stated in the contest rules. The contest judges will convene this weekend and we will post their decision Monday.
If you have any opinions on this matter, please post them on the message board and the judges will take them into consideration. Thank you.
Oh yeah, have a nice weekend!

Today's useless fact - During a wedding, when the preacher says "speak now or forever hold your peace," what happens if someone objects?
It depends. According to the links in the Wedding Tips category, if the bride or groom objects, the wedding is most likely off. Anyone else and, barring documented proof that the marriage is illegal, a drunken brawl is a more likely outcome. New York State Judge Douglas McKeon says he has never seen anyone object to a wedding and "unless (the) person who's getting married is married to the individual who has the objection, then that wedding is going to go ahead." Likewise, in the U.K. a wedding will not be stopped for an objection unless there's a legal reason.
The tradition of inviting such protests appears to be a symbolic remnant of the Catholic Church's marriage "banns," dating back hundreds of years and still practiced today by some churches. Banns are published announcements of forthcoming marriages, usually issued three weeks in advance. The Church officially established banns to reveal marriages potentially unknown to the couple's parents, and to ensure that the bride and groom were not closely related.
Today, many ceremonies omit "speak now or forever hold your peace." Modern practices such as obtaining a marriage license have rendered the question obsolete.

contrast \KAHN-trast\ noun
What does it mean?
1 : a person or thing that shows differences when compared to
another
2 : difference or unlikeness (as in color or brightness)
between related things especially when very plain
How do you use it?
"This note, prettily written on scented paper, was a great
contrast to the next, which was scribbled on a big sheet of thin
foreign paper, ornamented with blots and all manner of
flourishes and curly-tailed letters." (Louisa May Alcott,
_Little Women_)
Are you a word wiz?
"Contrast" comes from a Latin word for an action you do on your feet.
Which of these do you think is the root of "contrast"?
A. Greek "kinein," meaning "to move"
B. Latin "stare," meaning "to stand"
C. Old English "tredan," meaning "to tread"
D. Old Norse "rennan," meaning "to run"
Answer:
If you chose B, stand up and take a bow. "Contrast" traces back to
the Latin root "stare," which means "to stand." Combining "stare" with
the prefix "contra-," meaning "against," produced a verb that the French
adopted to mean "to oppose or resist." When borrowed into English in
the mid 1600s, the meaning changed to "to compare with respect to
differences." The corresponding noun followed soon after. "Stare" has a large
extended family which includes "stance," "circumstance,"
"constant," "distant," "instant," "obstacle," "stable," and "stage."

The mine operator called the nearby state prison and asked them to send over a safecracker to open his jammed safe. Soon a convict showed up, spun the dials, listened intently, and calmly opened the safe door.

The prisoner said, "Uh, the last time I opened a safe, I got $25,000."
Today's useless fact - What's the difference between a mortal sin, a cardinal sin, and a deadly sin?
Anyone who wants to be able to say, "But I didn't know!" when their time runs out is advised to look the other way. Still there? Perhaps the easiest way to tackle this touchy topic is to take the different categories one at a time. In the spirit of getting the truly terrible out of the way first, let's begin with the deadly sins.
According to some links in the Christian Morality category, deadly sins are synonymous with cardinal sins and correspond with "certain aspects of human nature." They include the big seven -- pride, gluttony, lust, avarice, sloth, wrath, and envy (aka the horrible things Kevin Spacey's character did to his victims in the movie Seven). The seven deadly sins never appear as a list in the Bible, though some believe they can be found in the Gospel of Matthew. These sins are opposed by the seven virtues -- charity, meekness, zeal, generosity, moderation, chastity, and humility.
Mortal sins are a bit more vague. They are voluntary acts "said, done or desired contrary to the eternal law, or a thought, word, or deed contrary to the eternal law." The key word there is "voluntary" because mortal sins cannot be committed "accidentally." That's good news, but mortal sins cannot be forgiven after the sinner dies. Depending on your particular system of beliefs, that may be cause to sign up for some volunteer work sooner rather than later.

disconcert \diss-kun-SERT\ verb
What does it mean?
1 : to disturb the arrangement of : upset
2 : to disturb the self-control of
How do you use it?
Dolores didn't allow poor playing by the orchestra to disconcert her
during her vocal performance in the musical.
Are you a word wiz?
The prefix "dis-" in front of a verb often means "do the opposite of"
something. In which one of these four words does "dis-" NOT mean "do
the opposite of"?
A. dislodge
B. disgrace
C. discover
D. disperse
Answer:
It's D that disturbs the usual arrangement. To "dislodge" someone is
to force them out of a place, but to "lodge" them is to provide them
with shelter. While "disgrace" means "to bring
shame to," "grace" means "to give an honor to." And to
"discover" something is to take the "cover" off of it.
"Disperse," which means "to scatter," doesn't fit in here, since
there's no verb "to perse." The root of "disperse" is
"dispergere," a Latin verb meaning "to scatter," created by
combining "dis-" and "spargere," which also means "to scatter."
"Disperse" is an example of a word in which "dis-" doesn't
indicate the opposite, but instead has an intensifying effect.

Today's useless fact - Do eyelashes grow back?
According to the links in the Beauty Tips category, individual eyelashes fall out all the time. People who wear contact lenses know this fact all too well. Eyelashes take about four to eight weeks to grow back. These tiny hairs (with help from their cousins to the north) protect your eyes from dust and sweat -- you'd definitely notice a difference if you were to lose them.
The medical term for the severe loss of eyelashes is madarosis. People who suffer from hypothyroidism (an underperforming thyroid gland) often lose their eyelashes in small clumps. Damaging an eyelash follicle, or the small cavity that grows the hair, can also affect future eyelash growth.
The web abounds with tales of eyelash suffering and loss. Message boards are also a good source of information on inordinate eyelash loss, though we recommend checking with your doctor before following anonymous advice.

analyze \AN-uh-lyze\ verb
What does it mean?
: to study or find out the nature and relationship of the
parts of (something) by examination of the whole
How do you use it?
The instructions on the test said to analyze the diagram and
then answer the questions about it.
Are you a word wiz?
Analyze the following choices and tell us which one you think
is a synonym of "analyze."
A. caper
B. smite
C. dissect
D. pose
Answer:
If after careful analysis, you chose C, you've got a good
handle on today's Buzzword. Although the earliest meaning of
the word "dissect" is "to cut up (as a plant or animal) into
separate parts for examination and study," another common
meaning is "to make a careful examination of," as in
"dissecting a story." In this way, both "analyze" and
"dissect" have to do with dividing a complex whole into its
parts or elements.

A man was suffering from constipation, so his doctor prescribed suppositories.

Today's useless fact - What are cereal companies talking about when they say 'part of a balanced breakfast'?
According to the links in the Nutrients category, a balanced breakfast should feature at least three of the following food groups:
* Dairy: milk, cheese, yogurt.
* Protein: beans, peanut butter, eggs.
* Fruit: bananas, oranges, berries.
* Vegetables: broccoli, carrots, celery.
* Grains: toast, tortilla, bagel, cereal.
A balanced breakfast includes proteins, carbohydrates, and a small amount of fat. Carbohydrates should come from whole-grain sources like oatmeal, wheat bread, and cereals with at least three grams of fiber per serving. Good protein sources are eggs, beans, or turkey sausage.
The "balance" of these three should tilt towards carbohydrates, with fiber providing sixty percent of the calories and protein and fat pitching in twenty percent each. The USDA Food Pyramid takes into account age, sex, and physical activity. Check it out for more details.
You've heard it before, but breakfast is important. Breakfast eaters tend to consume less fat and calorie-intensive food during the day. Eating a healthy breakfast can also help you avoid that midafternoon lunch coma.
A healthy diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low- fat dairy, fish, and lean meats or vegetarian sources of protein like beans. It's also low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt, and added sugars. Bon appetit.

apple-pie \AP-ul-PYE\ adjective
What does it mean?
: just right : perfect
How do you use it?
He sighed and said, "The sun, the foliage, the smell of
pumpkin pie: it's an apple-pie autumn day."
Are you a word wiz?
What was happening in history around the time the adjective
"apple-pie" first was used in English?
A. Apple Computer, Inc., now an industry giant, was beginning
production in a garage.
B. Jazz musicians were giving the nickname "The Big Apple" to New
York City.
C. John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, was growing up in
Leominster, Massachusetts.
D. European explorers in the West Indies were being introduced to a
fruit they dubbed "pineapple."
Answer:
If you chose C, you're right! "Apple-pie," meaning "perfect,"
was first used in English in the late 1700s, around the same
time that John "Johnny Appleseed" Chapman was a child. The
adjective "apple-pie" comes from the dessert. Evidently
whoever coined the adjective thought that a good apple pie
was the best thing that could be had. For decades "apple-pie"
simply meant "perfect," but more recently, it has come to
describe something that is typically American. That sense
comes from the idea that apple pie is an all-American dish,
even though apple pie was eaten in Europe long before it was
introduced to America.
