I might be taking off next week. Maybe. I don't know. It's been 8 weeks since I took a vacation from the Trib. We'll see. I guess you'll just have to tune in Monday to find out.
It's supposed to rain pretty steadily all weekend so be careful if you have to go out.
Have a great weekend.

Auto Body
A man went into his shrink's office and says, "Doc, you have got to help me! Every night I keep dreaming that I'm a sports car. The other night I dreamed I was a Trans Am. Another night I dreamed I was an Alpha Romero. Last night I dreamed I was a Porsche. What does this mean?"
"Relax," says the doctor, "You're just having an auto-body experience".

Today's useless fact - Where does Jell-O come from?
According to some links in our Home Recipes category, Jell-O, the 104-year-old treat that's currently sitting in over 72 percent of American kitchens, consists of four main ingredients: gelatin, water, artificial sweetener, and food coloring. Gelatin is the stuff that lends Jell-O its weird, not-quite-liquid, but-also-not-very-solid structure.
Now for the sobering news -- gelatin is made up of a protein called collagen that's found in cow and pig hides, hooves, bones, and connective tissue. To make Jell-O, this stuff is boiled down, chemicals are added, and then the collagen is extracted. So Jell- O is pretty much off limits for a vegetarian diet.
According to the official Jell-O web site, every four seconds a box of Jell-O gelatin is sold in the United States. Kraft Foods launched a commemorative History of Jell-O site a few years back to celebrate the centenary of America's favorite wobbly confection.

pueblo \PWEB-loh\ noun
What does it mean?
1 : an American Indian village of Arizona or New Mexico
consisting of flat-roofed stone or adobe houses joined in
groups sometimes several stories high
2 capitalized : a member of any of several American Indian
peoples of Arizona and New Mexico
How do you use it?
As Brock looked at the ruins of the pueblo, he wondered
what it must have been like to live there many years ago.
Are you a word wiz?
What word do you think is related to "pueblo"?
A. purple
B. private
C. popular
D. permanent
Answer:
We hope that answer C was a popular choice. "Pueblo" and
"popular" both stem from the Latin root "populus," meaning
"people." Spanish speakers adopted "populus" to form the word
"pueblo" and used it to mean "village" and "people." English
speakers adopted "pueblo" from the Spanish in the early 1800s.
The word "people" also traces back to "populus," as do other
words having to do with people, including "populate,"
"population," and "populace."

A New Business
A new business was opening, and one of the owner's
friends sent flowers for the occasion. But when
the owner read the card with the flowers, it said,
"Rest in Peace."
The owner was a little peeved, and he called the florist
to complain.
After he had told the florist about the obvious
mistake, the florist said, "Sir, I'm really
sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting
angry, you should imagine this:
Somewhere there is a funeral taking place today,
and they have flowers with a note saying,
"Congratulations on your new location."

Today's useless fact - How do you make flan?
First things first: What is flan? From the links in our Home Cooking Recipes category, we learned that flan is "an oven-baked caramel custard dessert that includes a velvety texture and the sweetness of a light caramel sauce."
Little did we know that there was more than one way to bake a flan, or that flan comes in flavors: cream cheese, coffee, pumpkin, and pineapple. And that's just for starters. About.com's guide to Mexican cuisine has a collection of flan recipes that reads like a Baskin-Robbins roster, with bing cherry, black raspberry, coconut, and sweet potato styles.
Classic flan begins with golden caramel that's made by boiling sugar and water to just the right syrupy consistency and pouring it into the bottom of a soufflé dish or individual ramekin. A custard of eggs and milk (often flavored with vanilla) is then poured on top of the caramel and baked until it sets.
Crème caramel is flan's French cousin. Fans of burnt sugar and milk custard should also consider recipes for crème brûlée, another yummy variation, which comes with a crispy caramel topping, usually achieved with a handheld kitchen blowtorch, or by placing the custard under the broiler.

proclaim \pro-KLAME\ verb
What does it mean?
: to announce publicly : declare
How do you use it?
After all the votes were recounted, the party's candidate was
proclaimed the winner.
Are you a word wiz?
"Proclaim" looks a lot like "claim," "acclaim," and "exclaim."
What do you think those words have in common?
A. They were all made up by the same person.
B. They all developed from the same parent word.
C. They were all coined at about the same time.
D. They don't have anything in common except that they look
alike.
Answer:
When words look alike, it is often because they come from the
same parent word. In this case, "claim," "acclaim," "exclaim,"
and "proclaim" all trace back to "clamare," a Latin verb
meaning "to cry out." That Latin root can be seen in the meaning
of each of those words; they all have something to do with
announcing, telling, or saying something--in a way, with "crying
out" a message.

Yes, Dear
An elderly man lay in a hospital, with his wife of 55 years sitting at his bedside.
"Is that you Ethel, at my side again?" he whispered.
"Yes, dear," she answered.
He softly said to her, "Remember years ago when I was in the Veteran's Hospital? You were with me then.
You were with me when we lost everything in a fire.
And Ethel, when we were poor - you stuck with me then too."
The man sighed and said, "I tell you Ethel, you are bad luck!"

Today's useless fact - What gives some parrots the ability to speak?
We turned to the links in the Lukol Parrots category and here's what we learned:
Biologist Michael Schindlinger studies how parrots communicate in their native habitat. Although parrots make a wide range of sounds in the wild, their complex communications are musical -- they may be singing for social status. Schindlinger's recordings of Yellow-headed Amazons in Northern Mexico show that isolated social groups have highly localized "neighborhood" dialects.
Many sources imply that parrots are simply gifted mimics who lack language comprehension and cognitive ability. The work of Dr. Irene Pepperberg, a parrot intelligence advocate, and her star pupil Alex, an African Grey, have helped to change that assessment - they showed that parrots identify colors, shapes, numbers, and actions. One of Dr. Pepperberg's graduate students is at work on InterPet Explorer, software that will enable parrots to interact with Internet-connected computers.
Dr. Pepperberg and several other online sources emphasize that not all parrots are capable of human speech -- a fact that potential parrot owners should be aware of. All parrots have the physical ability for speech, but some breeds are more likely than others to pick up human language. Just as with people, much of a parrot's ability also depends on the individual bird, its teacher, and its environment. Nonetheless, repetition, attention, and rewards may help teach Polly to curse like a sailor, sing like Pavarotti, or even revive an extinct Mayan dialect.

bonsai \bohn-SYE\ noun
What does it mean?
: a miniature plant (as a tree) grown in a pot by special
methods to restrict its growth; also : the art of growing such
a plant
How do you use it?
Ella tended her little bonsai tree carefully, hoping it would
continue to thrive for a long time.
Are you a word wiz?
Which of the following languages do you think gave us "bonsai"?
A. French
B. Swahili
C. Japanese
D. Maori
Answer:
English "bonsai" comes from the Japanese word "bonsai," which
literally means "tray planting." Prized in Japan, bonsai plants
are ordinary trees and shrubs that are carefully trained to be
small and have interesting shapes. To make them look this way,
people prune their roots and branches, and train their branches
with wire. The inspiration for bonsai is found in nature, where
trees that grow in harsh, rocky places end up having unusual
shapes because of their restricted growth.

Old Mrs. Pierpoint
Worried that they hadn't heard anything for days from the widow in the apartment next door, the mother said to her son, "Tony, would you go next door and see how old Mrs. Pierpoint is?"
A few minutes later, Tony returned.
"Well, is she all right?" asked the mother.
"She's fine, but she's rather annoyed with you," remarked Tony.
"At me?" the mother exclaimed. "Whatever for?"
Tony replied, "Mrs. Pierpoint said it's none of your business how old she is."
Today's useless fact - Why is the Dalmatian the official mascot of fire fighters?
Even though we had heard numerous theories about why Dalmatians were fire house mascots, the question offered us a great opportunity to sniff out the final word on the subject. Happily, our LUKOL Dalmatians directory yielded links that gave us the answer(s).
Dalmatians have been associated with fire departments for many years. Why? Many years ago, Dalmatians were used to chase rats out of the fire stations and horse stables of London. The dogs also guided the horse-pulled fire wagons through city streets. Apparently, the tradition endured even after the horse-drawn fire trucks were replaced with more modern fire engines.
That sounded logical, but we doggedly returned to our directory for further insights. We decided to try the Columbus Ohio Division of Fire's FAQ page, which includes the question "Why is a Dalmatian a fire dog?".
The site explains that these hard-working dogs were trained to escort the fire engine to protect the horses from stray dogs and other animals. The distinctive spots of the Dalmatian made it easy for the horses to distinguish from other dogs.
We returned to LUKOL directory and tried another site. This one stated that Dalmatians had a "natural calming effect on horses." The dogs escorted the horse-drawn carriage in order to quiet the horses. Once on the scene, however, the dog had other duties as well, including safeguarding the fire equipment from vandalism and theft.
So it appears that Dalmatians have a variety of admirable traits that have endeared them to firefighters and secured them a permanent position in fire-house history.

retract \rih-TRAK\ verb
What does it mean?
1 : to draw or pull back or in
2 : to withdraw (as an offer, a statement, or a claim)
How do you use it?
After the electric company announced that a squirrel had
found its way into a transformer, causing the power outage,
the newspaper had to retract its earlier statement that area
teens were likely at fault.
Are you a word wiz?
Our word "retract" descends from the Latin word
"retrahere," which is a combination of "re-" and "trahere."
What do you think "trahere" means?
A. to mark
B. to push
C. to climb
D. to draw
Answer:
Don't retract your answer if you chose D! At the root of
"retract" we find the Latin "trahere," meaning "to draw."
When Latin speakers added the prefix "re-" to "trahere," they
created "retrahere," a word meaning "to withdraw." By the 15th
century, English speakers had used the past participle of
"retrahere" -- "retractus" -- to make the word "retract" with
the meaning "to draw back or in." "Retrahere" is also the
ancestor of "retreat," meaning "an act of going away
especially from something difficult, dangerous, or
disagreeable."
